3D Printed Phone Stand

The Phone Stand was a request from my friends and family who wanted to be able to watch videos hands-free while still being able to charge it. It was produced by 3D printing PLA.

Initial Design

The first design I CADed was very similar to the final product. I designed it with a slight angle at the intent that the user could continue to view their screen while the phone was charging or sitting idle.

The Initial Prototype

To the left is an image of the initial prototype. It was 3D printed using PLA filament. The drawbacks to this design is it did not fit the off-brand apple charging cable being used by the intended users.

Second Iteration

I revisited the CAD to make a re-design that accounted for this off-brand charging cable. I had to raise the holder for the phone, which created an issue of tipping. To account for the tipping I added supports to the back of the frame to prevent the phone from falling.

Reflection

The phone stand was a success and accomplished everything it was designed to do. It was able to hold a phone horizontally and vertically without tipping. It also accommodated the user's charging cable (which was much bulkier and taller than the official Apple charger) without bending.
